President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to disregard what he describes as “mischief and misguided comments” aimed at diverting attention from its core mandate. The President emphasized that the Ghanaian economy is on a gradual path to recovery with the support of the Central Bank.

The BoG, particularly Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies, has faced criticism, notably from the Minority in Parliament, who assert their role in the country’s economic challenges and demand resignations.

Speaking at the 2023 Bank of Ghana End of Year Cocktail in Accra, President Akufo-Addo defended the Central Bank, urging it to stay focused on its responsibilities. He emphasized the need for the BoG to operate within its remit of independence, formulating and implementing policies that contribute to the desired transformation of the nation.

“And in so doing, the bank should ignore the mischief and misguided elements and maintain its focus as it has been doing for the execution of its core mandate,” President Akufo-Addo stated, reiterating the importance of resilience amidst external criticism.

The President’s affirmation of the BoG’s role in economic recovery comes amid a backdrop of calls for accountability and change. His encouragement for the Central Bank to remain steadfast signals a commitment to supporting its initiatives and maintaining stability in Ghana’s financial landscape.
