Joyce Bawa Mogtari, the Special Aide to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is urging the selection of a female running mate for John Mahama in the upcoming 2024 elections. In the 2020 polls, Mahama had chosen former Education Minister Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.

Speaking at the launch of the Obaasima Academy in Accra, Mogtari emphasized the importance of continuous support for women in leadership roles to address gender gaps. She acknowledged that while the NDC’s constitution guides the decision of the flagbearer in selecting a running mate, she expressed confidence that Naana Opoku-Agyemang would be considered for the position.
Former President Mahama has indicated that the selection process for the running mate will take place in February 2024. Mogtari, in her remarks, highlighted the significance of considering women for leadership roles in Ghanaian politics.
“I pray that in all the conversations that we are having, the choice of a running mate should at least consider the factor of the female in Ghanaian politics. There must be great examples out there as to why we can offer such platforms to women, both old and young, who will do enormous things to support the course of men,” she stated.
Mahama, in November, provided a strong indication about the identity of his running mate, noting that the individual had served as a Minister in his government and discharged duties diligently.
