The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has raised concerns over the heightened intensity of the harmattan season across the country. Collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Meteorological Services, the GMA confirms the prevalence of very dusty weather conditions, which pose significant risks to human health.

The surge in dust particles in the air is particularly worrisome for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. The GMA warns that these conditions could exacerbate respiratory ailments, potentially leading to acute attacks or worsening symptoms.

Moreover, reduced visibility on roads, especially during nighttime, increases the risk of accidents. The dry weather conditions also raise concerns about dehydration and serve as a catalyst for bush fires.

In response to these concerns, the GMA offers several recommendations for public safety:

Individuals are advised to wear facemasks to minimize exposure to dust particles.
Outdoor activities, especially for children, should be limited to minimize inhalation of dust. To prevent dehydration, it is recommended to drink water regularly throughout the day. Those with asthma or other respiratory conditions should carry their prescribed medications and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms worsen. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially on dusty roads and at night, to mitigate the risk of accidents.. The public is advised against burning bushes and engaging in activities that may spark bush fires. All roads under construction should be watered to suppress dust.

The GMA emphasizes the importance of adhering to these precautions to safeguard public health during this period of harsh weather conditions.
