The MP has built structures to accommodate 300 of the victims.

Mr Ablakwa announced on social media today [Saturday, February 10, 2024] that the project would be opened by former President John Dramani Mahama.

He posted: “All is set for today’s commissioning by H.E. John Mahama of the North Tongu MP & Partners Safe Alternative Housing Project which will house another 300 VRA spillage victims. Glory be to God and our amazing partners for what we have achieved after 7 weeks of construction.  I shall keep my pledge of leaving no spillage victim behind. In this together, rising together.”

The Volta River Authority (VRA) began water leakage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams on September 15, 2023, in response to a persistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.
Described as a disaster mitigation plan, the spillage exercise began at a low rate with no significant impact on downstream communities until October 10, 2023, when six spillage gates were opened to increase the flow as water inflow to the reservoir increased and levels approached the dam’s maximum capacity.

The VRA described the drill as critical for maintaining the dam’s integrity and technical installations.

The increased leakage has caused the Volta River’s banks to flood, displacing communities in nine district assembly in the Volta and Eastern regions, including North, Central, and South Tongu, Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, and Ada.

Almost all settlements along the lower Volta Basin were impacted, resulting in severe power outages, flooded homes, and displaced people going hungry.

Several thousand individuals were impacted by the dam leak, with Mr Ablakwa’s constituency being the most affected.

Following the challenges caused by the dam leakage, particularly among the homeless, the MP promised to assist house the afflicted victims by building homes for them.
