The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the initiation of an internal investigation following the tragic death of a first-year student at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School. Stacey Okyere, the student in question, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, after experiencing severe stomach pains.

GES has stated its commitment to actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to conduct an independent investigation into the matter. Stacey had reportedly been complaining of intense discomfort but was allegedly denied medical attention by the school nurse, who accused her of feigning illness. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Stacey was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised concerns and prompted severe criticism of the school’s management, with the family accusing them of neglect.

In a statement released on Monday, GES extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. The tragic incident has underscored the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions.

As investigations proceed, GES remains committed to uncovering the truth and addressing any lapses in protocol to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
