In a bid to tackle corruption within state intercity and intracity transport systems, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has announced the implementation of the Tap & Go Transport Initiative. This collaborative effort between the government and private investors aims to revolutionize the reservation of seats and payment of fares in public transport.

The Tap & Go Transport Initiative simplifies the fare payment process by allowing users to load funds onto their Tap & Go Transport cards or accounts. Dr. Bawumia highlighted that this innovative approach will streamline fund collection procedures, effectively curbing instances of fund diversion.

During the initiative’s launch, Dr Bawumia revealed the positive impact it has already had on Metro Mass Transit, with a significant surge in revenue. He noted that before the implementation of the tap-and-go system, the company was losing 50 per cent of its revenue annually. However, since its introduction, revenue generation has surpassed previous levels, showcasing the success of the initiative.

The Vice President also assured of plans to expand the use of the Tap & Go system to other forms of public transport, including commercial buses (trotros). He emphasized that this expansion will enhance trust within the system, reduce concerns regarding accurate daily takings for vehicle owners, and eliminate the diversion of funds within state-owned intercity and intracity buses.

The Tap & Go Transport Initiative promises to promote transparency and combat corruption within the public transport sector, marking a significant step towards modernizing the transportation system in Ghana.
