Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), expressed solidarity with junior nurses and midwives seeking government employment after completing their training.

The union has expressed deep concern over the neglect of essential healthcare skills, with many qualified professionals remaining unemployed while health facilities face critical staffing shortages.

“The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG) stands in solidarity with our junior colleagues who are rightfully demanding employment from the government upon completing their training in Nursing and Midwifery. It is disheartening to witness the neglect of essential healthcare skills, as many qualified nurses and midwives remain unemployed while our health facilities suffer from critical understaffing.”

In a statement, UPNMG stressed the continues disregard on the healthcare profession that not only exacerbates staffing challenges in health institutions but also undermines the integrity of Ghana’s healthcare system.

“Healthcare is an essential service that is crucial for the economic development of a country and nurses and midwives form the fulcrum of that. It is profoundly concerning that the government appears indifferent to the appeals of these unemployed nurses and midwives, particularly at a time when many experienced professionals are emigrating in search of better working conditions. This disregard not only exacerbates the staffing crisis in our health facilities but also undermines the integrity of our healthcare system.”

UPNMG encouraged peaceful demonstrations by the junior nurses and midwives to advocate for their employment rights, cautioning against any violence that could detract from the purpose of their activities.

“We believe that this action by our junior colleagues is in the right direction and must be given the needed attention. The government should perceive this not as sabotage, but as the response of impoverished young people seeking employment opportunities to secure their basic needs. We urge our junior colleagues to demonstrate peacefully to drum home their demands. Any form of violence perpetrated on the day of the demonstration will mask the purpose of the activities and hence the need to be civil in going about it.”

The union has called on the government to urgently collaborate on sustainable solutions to address the unemployment crisis within the nursing and midwifery sectors.
