The Minister for Education Dr.Yaw Osei Adutwum has indicated, that government is creating a new Ghana through education.
Speaking at an event named “The FREE SHS STORY” organised at University of Professional Studies, Accra the sector minister said the Free SHS has Access, Equity and Quality education for every Ghanaian child.
The Free SHS is a campaign promise by President Akufo-Addo and since its inception in September 2017 About 2.5 million students have so far benefited from the free SHS policy from the 2017/18 to 2022/23 academic year.
Dr.Yaw Osei Adutwum has lauded the inclusivity of the Free Senior High School and stressed that the policy fosters fairness, ensuring that no child is left behind, and has resulted in the highest student enrollment in more than ten years.
“No longer are we going to implement cut-off in this country. No student can be cut off from opportunity…When they come, we will hold their hands and help them. ”
The sector minister also shared a resounding success of the Free SHS policy for the 2023/2024 academic year. The regional statistics shows that northern and savannah region are leading in the enrollment with 94% respectively. The Upper East and Upper West also taking second place in the enrollment with rates of 92% and 89% respectively.
He further, revealed that more than 60% of candidates obtained A1 to C6. Touching on the notion that basic schools have been neglected,”we are building new junior high schools, we’re changing the color of the uniform and the color of the school building as well” he added.
He ended by saying the free shs story has just begun.
