Ghana joins the global community in celebrating Eid ul-Adha, with the government declaring Monday, June 17, 2024, a public holiday to honor the festival.

Eid ul-Adha, known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God’s command. In remembrance, Muslims perform the ritual sacrifice of animals, such as lambs, with the meat distributed among family, friends, and the needy.

The festival also marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Former President John Dramani Mahama extended warm Eid Mubarak wishes to the Muslim community, encouraging acts of love and compassion during the festivities. He also appealed for their prayers in support of his bid for the upcoming December elections.
