Zenith Bank (Ghana) Ltd has solidified its commitment to promoting academic excellence by signing a five-year agreement with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to sponsor the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate award from 2024 to 2028. Previously, the bank sponsored the award in 2020, 2021, and 2022, granting each winner a laptop and a cash prize of GH¢30,000.
At the 2023 awards ceremony held at the National Theatre in Accra, the Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank (Ghana) Ltd, Mr. Henry Chinedu Onwuzurigbo, presented the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate, Leonard Kofi Marton Amo-Kodieh, a former student of St. James Seminary SHS in Sunyani, with a laptop and a cash prize of GH¢30,000 for his outstanding performance, achieving straight ‘A1’s in all subjects. Amo-Kodieh, now a Human Biology student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), also received a plaque and a desktop computer for his alma mater.
The second Best WASSCE Candidate award was given to Dzandu Selorm, an alumnus of Labone Senior High School and a current Human Biology student at KNUST. He received a certificate, cash prize, a laptop, and a plaque and desktop computer for Labone Senior High School.
Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, another former student of St. James Seminary SHS, received the third Best WASSCE Candidate award, which included a cash prize, laptop, and certificate. His alma mater also received a plaque and a desktop computer.
Mr. Onwuzurigbo stated that this sponsorship is part of Zenith Bank Ghana’s dedication to investing in education and supporting future leaders by recognizing and rewarding academic excellence. He emphasized that the bank’s sponsorship aims to encourage students to strive for greatness and contribute to building a brighter future for the country.
The Head of the National Office of WAEC, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, expressed gratitude for Zenith Bank’s sponsorship, noting that all three top candidates from Ghana also received awards at the International Excellence Awards for WASSCE held in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, congratulated the students and highlighted the government’s investments in secondary education, which have significantly improved WASSCE results in recent years.
