The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) has expressed deep concern over significant delays in the disbursement of allowances to trainee nurses and midwives, despite assurances from the government. According to the GNMTA, the promised payment schedule has not been fully met.
In a statement released on Tuesday, June 25, the association acknowledged partial payments made to some members. First, second, and third-year trainees received allowances for 5, 6, and 5 months respectively. However, the 2022 batch, slated to receive arrears on May 23, and subsequent batches, are still awaiting their allowances.
Furthermore, the GNMTA emphasized that trainees from the 2017-2020, 2018-2021, 2019-2022, and 2020-2023 batches have not received any allowances at all. The association labeled this situation as unacceptable and demanded immediate action.
The reinstatement of trainee nurses’ allowances was a critical decision aimed at supporting members during their training. However, the current delays are causing financial strain and demoralization among trainees who heavily depend on these funds.
The GNMTA calls upon the Ministry of Health, the government, and all relevant authorities to urgently address this issue. They underscore that timely disbursement of allowances is crucial to fulfill the intended support for trainees.
The association urges all Ghanaians to join in amplifying concerns to ensure this pressing issue garners the attention it deserves. They stress that the future of Ghana’s healthcare system relies on the well-being and support of its trainees, with the timely payment of allowances being a critical component.
The GNMTA remains optimistic that swift action will be taken and pledges to continue advocating vigorously for the rights and welfare of its members.
