As the world celebrated International Women in Engineering Day on June 25, 2024, female engineers in Tamale, Ghana, took the opportunity to inspire and mentor young girls, encouraging them to pursue careers in engineering.

The event, held under the theme “Enhanced by Engineering,” aimed to break down gender barriers in a field traditionally perceived as male-dominated.
Madina Seidu Adam, a prominent female engineer in Tamale, led the charge in motivating young women to consider engineering as a viable career path.
Speaking at a mentorship program attended by students from various secondary schools, Adam emphasized that women have consistently excelled in engineering and other technical fields. “It’s crucial for young girls to understand that engineering is not an impossible dream for them,” Adam stated. “Many women before them have paved the way and achieved great success in this field.”
Adwoa Gyamera, another accomplished engineer, urged policymakers to implement measures that would encourage more women to enter engineering programs, stressing the importance of creating supportive environments and policies that facilitate women’s participation in STEM fields.
Students who attended the mentorship program expressed enthusiasm about the possibilities presented to them. One participant shared, “Meeting successful female engineers has opened my eyes to what I can achieve. I’m now seriously considering engineering as my future career.”
The celebration of International Women in Engineering Day in Tamale serves as a testament to the growing recognition of women’s contributions to the field and the ongoing efforts to increase female representation in engineering. As more young women are inspired to pursue engineering, the industry stands to benefit from a more diverse workforce and fresh perspectives in problem-solving and innovation.
