The Parliamentary Committee investigating the leaked tape involving a plot to remove the Inspector-General of Police has recommended sanctions for three senior police officers implicated in the incident.
Chaired by Abuakwa South lawmaker Samuel Atta Akyea, the committee’s report identifies COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi as having committed major offences under Police regulations. The report urges that these officers be sanctioned according to the Police disciplinary procedures.
The committee’s findings, based on Section 19 of the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350), will be communicated to the President, who holds the disciplinary authority. The committee noted that the officers breached Section 17(d) of the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350), which states:
“It shall be a misconduct for a police officer to engage in any activity outside his official duties which is likely to involve him in political controversy or to lead to his taking improper advantage of his position in the Police Service.”
Additionally, the officers violated Regulation 82(1)(c) of the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I 76), which similarly declares it a major offence for an officer to engage in activities outside official duties that could involve political controversy or lead to improper advantage.
The leaked tape captured COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi plotting with former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Daniel Bugri Naabu, to remove the Inspector-General of Police from office.
