The High Court in Ho has set July 29, 2024, as the date to deliver its ruling on the SALL election petition challenging the election of John Peter Amewu as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hohoe.
Approximately 17,000 voters from the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi areas (SALL) did not participate in the 2020 parliamentary elections in the Hohoe Constituency. This lack of participation left them without representation in the 8th parliament due to the creation of the Oti Region from the Volta Region under CI 112.
Five Ghanaians from the SALL enclave petitioned the High Court in Ho, seeking a declaration to nullify John Peter Amewu’s election as MP for Hohoe. The petitioners argue that the 2020 parliamentary elections in Hohoe infringed on their rights to vote and representation.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed hope that the court will rectify the alleged injustice done to the SALL residents in the 2020 elections. Speaking to journalists after the hearing on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, voiced optimism that the court’s ruling would favor the people of SALL, aligning with the party’s support for their quest for justice.
“We are confident that we have a very good case, and we believe that no matter how far Amewu runs away from this case, he can only run from his shadows. But, definitely, the day of judgment will come. Even if he runs like a horse, he can definitely never hide. So, on July 29, which is judgment day, we are expecting good news because justice delayed is justice denied,” Gunu stated.
