Ghana’s capital, Accra, is projected to face increased congestion by 2030 due to significant population growth. This is according to recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The GSS’s latest population projections for 2021 to 2050 indicate a substantial population increase in the Greater Accra region. As of 2024, Ghana’s total population is projected to exceed 33 million, up from 30.8 million in 2021. The Greater Accra Region, in particular, is expected to see a rise in school-aged children, reaching 2.96 million by 2030. Additionally, the youth population aged 15 to 24 years is anticipated to nearly double.
Deputy Government Statistician Dr. Faustina Frempong, who presented the data, emphasized the need for government intervention in the rapid population growth in the Greater Accra region, which covers a relatively small land area.
The purpose of the population projections is to provide insights into the future demographic landscape, informing policymakers, researchers, and the public about potential changes. According to the GSS, this information is crucial for tracking the implementation of national, continental, and global development goals.
