Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, will be officially unveiled today, July 9, as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This significant event is set to take place in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, which is a stronghold of the NPP.
Francis Adomako, the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the NPP, mentioned that the region is eagerly anticipating the unveiling. On Friday, July 5, the National Council of the NPP formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. This decision has garnered widespread support from top party officials, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has expressed confidence in their ability to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.
In his statement, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for selecting him as his running mate. NAPO committed to working closely with Dr. Bawumia to ensure a decisive win for the party in the upcoming elections.
The NPP has robustly defended NAPO against criticisms of his perceived arrogance. To address these concerns, some stakeholders have suggested that NAPO use prepared scripts for his public appearances to better manage his messaging and avoid potential gaffes.
Furthermore, the NPP has officially opened nominations for the Manhyia South seat following Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s elevation to the party’s running mate position, leaving the seat vacant. While Parliament has not yet made an official declaration, the party has promised a free and fair electoral process and advised prospective candidates to be cautious with their remarks, emphasizing the internal nature of this matter.
In a twist, NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, is reportedly contesting for the same parliamentary seat, potentially setting up a family rivalry within the political arena.
