Six government agencies have declared their intention to join the impending strike action by Organised Labour in protest of the proposed sale of 60% of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) shares in four hotels.
This decision follows Organised Labour’s announcement of a nationwide industrial strike set to begin on Monday, July 15, 2024. They have directed members to stay away from work if SSNIT fails to cancel the controversial hotel sale.
The six agencies that have committed to participating in the strike include Public Utility Workers Union of TUC-Ghana (PUWU), General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of TUC, Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), Teacher Unions, Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and Ghana Medical Association (GMA)
In a related development, Rock City Hotel, in a letter dated July 12, announced its decision to withdraw its bid to purchase the 60% shares of the four hotels.
The hotels in question include La Palm Beach Hotel, Labadi Beach Hotel, Royal Ridge Hotel and Elmina Beach Hotel
Rock City’s letter, addressed to the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kofi Osafo-Maafo, expressed their disappointment at the lack of stakeholder engagement, which they believe has contributed to the negativity surrounding their bid.

SSNIT’S STAKE IN FOUR HOTELS
The Leadership of Organised Labour, at its emergency meeting held on Friday, 12th July 2024 at the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Accra resolved to reiterate its position that ‘the proposed sale of SSNIT’s share in the four hotels is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers’. It therefore called for termination of the process with immediate effect.
Further, Organised Labour has directed all workers not to report to work from Monday, July, 15, 2024 until the demands are met.
The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) is an accredited member of Organised Labour and its members are required to comply with the resolution.
Consequently, the National Executive Council (NEC) of JUSAG has directed that effective Monday, 15th July, 2024 staff of the Judicial Service are not to report to work in compliance with the Organised Labour decision.
