The Minority in Parliament has criticized the calls from the Majority caucus for a debate between John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate.
On Wednesday, July 24, the Majority reiterated their demand for Mahama to accept Bawumia’s debate invitation ahead of the December polls.
They argue such a debate would offer Ghanaians a platform to compare the two parties and assess their economic management capabilities.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, speaking in parliament, dismissed the proposal outright. “Mr Speaker, monkeys they say play by sizes. Mr Speaker, how can a driver’s mate debate an experienced driver?” he stated.
He suggested that the Vice President should first debate the Minority’s economic spokespersons before considering a face-off with the former president.
“Mr Speaker we all know that the Chairman of the Economic Management team is the Vice President so the Vice President can only debate honourable Adongo. He should debate honorable Adongo or Ricketts Hagan,” Forson added.
“A driver’s mate cannot debate an experienced driver. Mr Speaker that is the fact. So, we throw the challenge, he should debate honorable Adongo first, honorable Ampem second, and honorable Ricketts Hagan third before he considers debating former president John Mahama,” he stated.
