Ghanaians in the UK Express Concern Over High Commission’s Inaction Amid Riots

Ghanaians living in the United Kingdom are increasingly alarmed by a wave of anti-immigrant protests that have escalated into violent riots across several British cities. The protests, driven by online misinformation, have sparked attacks on mosques, hotels housing immigrants, and individuals of color.

The unrest was triggered by the tragic killings of three young girls in Southport, England, leading to riots in cities such as Liverpool, Leeds, and Belfast. Far-right groups have clashed with riot police, and there have been multiple reports of ethnic minorities being attacked on the streets.

In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a stern warning to rioters, stating they will face lengthy prison sentences as the government seeks to quell the worst outbreak of violence in Britain in 13 years. “There are attacks happening in our hotels in Rotherham. Marauding gangs intent on law-breaking or worse, windows smashed, fire set ablaze. Residents and staff are in absolute fear. There’s no justification for taking such action,” he said.

Amidst the chaos, Ghanaians in the UK have taken to social media to voice their fears and frustrations, with many criticizing the Ghanaian High Commission in the UK for its lack of support and communication during this crisis.

The silence from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has further heightened anxiety among Ghanaians in the UK, leaving many feeling uncertain and unprotected as the situation unfolds.
