The National Council of Private Teachers has issued a warning that they may boycott the 2024 general elections if the government does not take action to resolve the ongoing challenges within the educational sector.
The Council has expressed significant concerns over several issues that they say are burdening private teachers. These include the high taxes imposed on private schools and the exclusion of these schools from the government’s STEM education initiatives.
In an interview with Citi News, James Kwame Ackon, the Executive Director of the National Council of Private Teachers, outlined the motivations behind the potential boycott. He emphasized the financial strain on private school owners, which hampers their ability to fairly compensate teachers and other staff. Additionally, Ackon highlighted the plight of graduates who, despite paying substantial fees throughout their education, remain unemployed after completing their studies and national service.
Ackon questioned the value of voting under these circumstances, saying, “What benefits are we going to get from voting? When I am a graduate with my certificate, my license, my national service, and I am not employed.”
