Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has not yet determine the venue for the upcoming parliamentary session on September 3, 2024, following his decision to recall the House from recess.
The recall was initiated after Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Speaker, emphasizing the need for Parliament to reconvene and address critical government business.
However, in his communication, Bagbin highlighted ongoing renovation work in the parliamentary chamber, which, along with other logistical challenges, has delayed the identification of a suitable venue for the meeting.
The parliamentary chamber is currently undergoing a €2.6 million refitting, part of the e-Parliament project aimed at digitizing parliamentary operations. The renovations are expected to be completed by the end of October.
During an inspection of the ongoing work, Bagbin noted that he is still in the process of securing an appropriate location for the September 3 session.
“It’s a recall, it’s not the usual normal meetings. When I was talking about the end of October I talked about the normal meetings. But for the recall, once I recall the House, they must obey. They have to comply. Just like how I also have to obey the constitutional imperative and so on the 3rd, we expect that the Parliament will come to sit.”
“Now, where they sit is for me to determine. And as I said, it’s possible I can determine that we sit under Italy and they have to sit there. I can also determine that we can go to sit in Bolga and that one too, they have to or we go to Axim or we can go to Hohoe or any place and they have to comply. Because it is something like an extraordinary meeting.”
“There’s some extraordinary matter that has cropped up that needs the State’s Parliament to come and attend to it. And the determining factor is that of the national interest and that is what you look at.”
