The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have strongly denied allegations suggesting they intend to seize control of the country if the 2024 elections become violent.
These claims were attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), in a recent publication. However, in a press release dated August 23, 2024, GAF clarified that they have not issued any statement or held a press conference hinting at a coup.
The release stressed that GAF’s primary role is to support the Ghana Police Service upon request, emphasizing that this support does not equate to a government overthrow.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, stated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”
GAF also urged civil society groups and the media to avoid using their name to incite political tension and called on all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the December 2024 elections. They reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining peace and tranquillity, encouraging citizens to feel confident and safe in carrying out their lawful activities.
