Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to restore control of the Songo Lagoon salt mining operations to the people of the Sege Constituency.
As part of his ongoing constituency visits, Mahama addressed the concerns of the Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and residents of Sege, particularly those from the Ada and Songo Lagoon communities, who have expressed deep frustration over the loss of their traditional salt mining areas.
The community members claim that their primary source of livelihood, the Songo Lagoon, has been taken away by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
In a passionate plea to the former president, the Chiefs, and Queen Mothers requested that he prioritize the reclamation of the lagoon for their use if he returns to power. “The Songo Lagoon is our heritage and our lifeline. We implore you to restore it to us, so we can continue our salt mining activities, which sustain our families,” they said.
In his response, Mahama assured the community of his determination to address their grievances.
He emphasized his commitment to reclaiming the Songo Lagoon and restoring it to its full potential for salt mining, which he believes will greatly benefit the local economy and the entire nation. “I understand your challenges, and I promise that under my leadership, we will reclaim the Songo Lagoon. We will also improve the poor road networks, and complete the abandoned E-blocks to ensure a better future for the Sege community,” Mahama stated.
The NDC Flagbearer’s pledge has reignited hope among the people of Sege, who are eager to see positive changes in their community.
