The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has issued a public warning about the circulation of counterfeit energy meters within its service areas.
This alert follows a significant seizure by the Ghana Police Service, which confiscated over 200 sub-standard meters during a routine inspection on the Kenyase-Atronie road in the Sunyani Metropolis.
These meters, suspected of being smuggled from neighboring countries such as Togo and Côte d’Ivoire, were intercepted at a checkpoint. NEDCo has strongly advised the public not to purchase these unverified meters, as they pose serious safety risks, including the potential for fire outbreaks and damage to transformers, which could result in extended power outages.
The company stressed that these meters have not been tested or calibrated to meet the standards set by the Energy Commission and the Ghana Standards Authority. In a statement signed by Corporate Communications Manager Maxwell K. Kotoka, NEDCo reminded the public that it is illegal to import meters without proper authorization or to acquire them from unauthorized sources.
NEDCo has committed to taking legal action against those involved in the distribution and sale of these fake meters and announced plans for a special operation to identify and arrest offenders. Customers who have already acquired these meters are urged to return them to the nearest NEDCo office to avoid legal repercussions.
“Accordingly, NEDCo will take all necessary legal actions against individuals and/or organizations engaged in the distribution (sale, purchase and transportation inclusive) of these fake meters. A special surprise operation will be rolled out soon to detect and arrest perpetrators and beneficiaries of the distribution of these fake meters.
“All those who have acquired these meters are advised to take them to the nearest NEDCo office to avoid arrests and prosecution. There may be no further notice on this exercise,” the statement concluded.
