Emergency Recall of Parliament Unnecessary and Wasteful – Minority

The Minority caucus in Parliament has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the recent urgent recall of the House, calling it unnecessary and a wasteful use of resources.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson criticized the recall, arguing that it represented an imprudent expenditure of taxpayers’ money, given the limited outcomes of the session.

The two-day parliamentary recall was convened to address a list of 11 items at the Accra Conference Centre, but only two of these items were discussed. Dr. Forson highlighted that the minimal scope of discussions and the lack of significant results did not justify the expenses incurred to bring Members of Parliament back to the House.

He argued that the recall lacked the urgency or importance to warrant such an extraordinary measure, especially when the nation faces more pressing financial challenges.

Dr. Forson stated,

“Mr. Speaker, I want to say that there was no way the business we have done so far should have warranted such a recall. We were recalled to tackle tax exemptions and loans. Right Honourable Speaker, one of it [the loans] has been approved.

He further expressed concern over tax exemptions, stating, “Mr. Speaker, our concern remains with the tax assumptions. We strongly believe that these giveaways should be curtailed. We strongly believe that these giveaways of tax exemptions are unwarranted.

“We believe that at a time that the country is bleeding, Ghana should not be giving such giveaways to crony businesses.”
