UCC Vice Chancellor Appeals Court Injunction on Tenure Extension

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has appealed a High Court ruling that placed an injunction on his ability to perform his duties.

The injunction was granted following an application by John Mevemeo, who seeks to declare the renewal of Prof. Boampong’s tenure as unlawful.

Prof. Boampong was originally appointed as Vice Chancellor in 2020 for a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal. Ahead of the expiration of his term in July 2023, the university’s governing council renewed his contract for another three years. However, Mevemeo challenged this renewal, arguing that it violates the university’s statutes and the 1992 constitution, as it would extend Prof. Boampong’s tenure beyond his retirement in 2025.

Pending the final resolution of the case, Mevemeo requested the High Court to issue an injunction preventing Prof. Boampong from continuing in his role. The court granted this injunction on September 4, 2024.

Prof. Boampong has since appealed the decision, arguing that the injunction could disrupt the smooth functioning of the university. He believes the trial judge made an error in granting the injunction.
