David Apasera, Chairman and aspiring flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has rejected the results of the 2024 PNC National Congress, held on September 7 to elect the party’s national executives ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The congress faced multiple delays due to an injunction filed by Apasera’s camp. Despite these disruptions, Bernard Mornah was declared the flagbearer by Electoral Commission officials, having secured 1,138 votes.
At a press conference in Accra on Sunday, Apasera accused the Electoral Commission of conducting a fraudulent and biased election, alleging that the process disregarded a prior injunction from the Accra High Court. He claimed that Bernard Mornah and the Electoral Commission conspired to undermine his candidacy and hinted at possible legal action to contest the election results.
“For all intents and purposes, yesterday’s purported election was fraudulent, lopsided and can never be free and fair. I am aware that Article 55 (4) of the 1992 constitution requires political parties to have a national calendar. This means that a political party cannot conduct elections and have the EC declare the said election when other regions had not participated at all in such an election,” Apasera stated.
He further criticized the Electoral Commission for declaring the results despite some regions, including the Western and Northern regions, allegedly not participating in the vote.
In related developments, Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, was elected as the National Chairman of the PNC during the congress. He won with 893 votes, defeating Hajia Hajara, who received 460 votes out of the 1,382 votes cast. Of these, 1,353 were valid, while 29 were rejected.
