The Frimpong-Manso Institute, a prominent Ghanaian think tank, has called for restraint and increased transparency as Ghana prepares for its 2024 elections.
According to the think tank, with campaigning intensifying following the filing of nominations by presidential candidates, the Institute acknowledged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) right to protest over concerns about the voters’ register.
“This comes against the backdrop of lingering concerns by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the voters’ register, and its decision to organize protests at premises of the Electoral Commission throughout the country”.
“The NDC is perfectly right to ventilate its objections to aspects of the election process, and even demonstrate to demand redress of their legitimate grievances”.
However, it urged the opposition party to exercise moderation in its demands and demonstrations.
The statement emphasized the critical need for trust-building between the Electoral Commission (EC) and political parties, warning that any missteps or escalation of tensions could have severe consequences for the nation.
“There is an urgent need to build strong bridges of trust between the EC and the political parties to ensure peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible elections,” the Institute stated, highlighting the importance of a widely acceptable electoral outcome for Ghana’s stability.
