The management of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) has confirmed a safety incident that occurred at Terminal 3’s Departure Hall on Sunday, September 22, 2024. At approximately 3:27 p.m., a passenger’s luggage was found emitting smoke near the baggage wrap area, sparking immediate concern.
KIA’s Aviation Security Department responded swiftly to the situation, isolating the luggage and implementing the airport’s Emergency Operations protocols. As part of the safety procedures, passengers present in the terminal were evacuated to ensure their protection.
In a statement, KIA management confirmed that the passenger in question has been handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for further interrogation.
Additionally, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) issued a reminder to passengers, warning against traveling with batteries, as this violates International Civil Aviation Regulations. Any luggage found containing prohibited items, such as batteries, will be confiscated, and the owner will be handed over to authorities for further action.
KIA management extended their gratitude to passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation, assuring the public that passenger safety remains their highest priority. Normal terminal operations have since resumed smoothly.
