Key stakeholders at Ghana’s ports, including freight forwarders and customs agents, are set to hold a protest today, Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 9 a.m. This demonstration is aimed at challenging the excessive fees and exploitative practices of shipping lines operating in the country.
The protest, organized in collaboration with a coalition of trade associations and concerned stakeholders, seeks to highlight unfair practices that are negatively impacting the logistics and supply chain industry in Ghana.
According to a press statement released on September 20, 2024, the group will gather at the premises of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) in Tema. From there, they will march peacefully to the offices of several shipping lines located in Tema.
During the protest, the group plans to submit formal petitions to key government bodies, including the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.
The coalition emphasized that the purpose of the protest is to push policymakers and shipping line representatives to address “longstanding issues of unscrupulous practices” that continue to harm the Ghanaian economy and create inefficiencies in the logistics and supply chain sectors.
