No Pregnant Protester Arrested, Reports Completely False – Police Clarify

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that one of the protesters arrested during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration, Gloria Vera Louise, was pregnant at the time of her arrest.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that Gloria was four months pregnant when she was arrested and later remanded for two weeks, the Police have confirmed that medical examinations from independent health facilities revealed that she is not pregnant. They also noted that there were no visible signs of pregnancy at the time of her arrest.

In a statement, the Police clarified,

“In the case of the alleged pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise, We would like to clarify that at the time of the arrest, there was no visible indication that she was pregnant. Additionally, at no point during the arrest or subsequent interactions did the said suspect inform the Police of a pregnancy. Again, there was no communication to the court of any such condition, either by herself or through her lawyers.

“In order to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claim in the public domain of the alleged pregnancy, the Police took the initiative and sent her to the Police Hospital and an independent health facility for a thorough medical examination. Both medical results came out negative, suggesting that Gloria Vera Louise, is not pregnant as claimed.”

The Office of the Attorney General had previously expressed disappointment in Gloria’s legal team for not disclosing her alleged pregnancy during the bail hearing.

In related developments, the Police have also pressed charges against another protester, Grace Asantewaa, for exposing a child to danger during the demonstration. The charge, which falls under section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), relates to her decision to bring a child to the protest, potentially putting the minor at risk.

The Ghana Police Service used the opportunity to advise the public to avoid involving children in activities that could endanger their safety.

Between September 21 and 23, the police arrested 54 protesters, citing various offenses.
