John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured that the next NDC administration will prioritize the protection of women and vulnerable groups in society.
Speaking at the launch of the NDC Women’s Manifesto on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), he stated that his government would put measures in place to safeguard the interests of women.
He promised to amend the Interstate Succession Act (PNDCL 111), which regulates the distribution of property when a person dies without a will.
“We will pass the Property Rights of Spouses Bill, the Domestic Workers Bill, and the Intestate Succession Amendment Bill, further solidifying women’s rights and protections,” he stated.
The law currently allocates three-sixteenths of the estate to the surviving spouse, nine-sixteenths to the surviving child, and one-eighth each to the surviving parent and customary law.
Mahama believes the current form of the law is not favorable to women and must be revised to better protect them.
In addition, Mahama said his administration would implement the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, ensuring that women hold at least 30% of political appointments.
“By operationalizing the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, we will ensure that women hold at least 30% of political appointments”.
John Mahama also assured that a law would be passed to protect the vulnerable, especially house helpers who are mostly females and are subjected to ill-treatment from their bosses.
He also highlighted the Women’s Development Bank the next NDC administration will establish to provide soft loans to women to expand their businesses irrespective of the size.
