LINSOD welcomes NDC’s modified stance on Voters register, urges EC compliance

Lawyers in Search of Democracy (LINSOD) has welcomed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) position on the controversial voters register following a recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.

The NDC has agreed to accept the Electoral Commission’s (EC) promise to release a corrected and updated version of the Provisional Voters Register within a week.

“LINSOD also welcomes the NDC’s modified position, which was made public after a late-evening meeting by the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) following the IPAC engagement earlier in the day. In their press release, the NDC says it has accepted the Electoral Commission’s promise to release the corrected and updated version of the Provisional Voters Register to the party within one week for scrutiny”.

However, the party calls for offline re-exhibition of the register and a multi-stakeholder examination of the EC’s IT system.

“The party also welcomes the Commission’s decision to re-exhibit the register online, but pleads with the Commission to also re-exhibit the register offline to allow the majority of the Ghanaian electorate, who live in rural communities and do not possess the ability to check their information online”.

LINSOD commends this shift and urges the EC to comply with these new demands, emphasizing their importance in ensuring transparency, trustworthiness, and credibility in the upcoming December 7th general elections.

“In our view, the NDC’s modified position offers an excellent opportunity to the Electoral Commission to rebuild confidence in the electorate by the Commission adhering strictly to its promise to release the corrected and updated version of the Provisional Voters Register to the NDC within one week, and by acceding to NDC’s demands to re-exhibit the register offline as well; and to allow for “multi-stakeholder” and inter-party examination of the Commission’s IT system. We think these are the least the Electoral Commission can do to win our trust back, and we accordingly, advise the Chairperson of the Commission to take bold steps towards the implementation of these measures quickly, and in good time enough in order not to jeopardize the December 7th elections”.
