GPRTU opts out of nationwide strike against illegal mining

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC has announced its decision to opt out of the upcoming nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, 2024.

The strike, organized by various labor groups, aims to pressure the government into taking stronger action against illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey.”

In a press release issued by the GPRTU expressed its strong opposition to the environmental degradation caused by galamsey operations, particularly the destruction of water bodies.

The union stated that it “condemns illegal mining in no uncertain terms” and supports actions intended to combat the menace.

However, citing concerns over the “irreparably adverse impact” on commuters, the GPRTU has chosen not to participate in the strike. This decision sets the transport union apart from other organized labor groups planning to join the industrial action.
