The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning regarding the unauthorized use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements, particularly during demonstrations across the country.
In a statement released on Monday, October 14, GAF expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals wearing unapproved military uniforms while providing security for public figures. This practice, despite previous warnings, has also been observed in illegal mining areas, commonly referred to as Galamsey sites.
GAF highlighted the serious security risks associated with this unauthorized use of military attire, noting that it could damage the reputation of the armed forces.
“The attention of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been drawn to the unauthorized and unlawful use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements by protesters during demonstrations, as well as by individuals providing security for some public figures,” the statement read.
“GAF has also noted with dismay similar illegal acts among persons operating in illegal mining areas (Galamsey sites) and some political activists. Despite ongoing education and warnings, this concerning trend appears to be increasing.”
GAF warned that individuals found violating these regulations will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The public is also encouraged to report any suspicious activities involving the use of unauthorized military attire.
“In light of the security implications of these illegal acts, GAF will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigour of the law. We also urge the public to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorized military attire.”
GAF reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the security of citizens and protecting Ghana’s territorial integrity. As the country approaches the 2024 general elections, the armed forces emphasized the need for public cooperation to maintain peace and security.
