EC disqualifies NDC’s Joana Cudjoe from Amenfi Central Parliamentary race

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has disqualified Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, from contesting in the 2024 elections.

This disqualification follows an Interlocutory Injunction issued by the High Court in Sekondi on May 31, 2024, in the case of *Gyedu Frimpong & 4 Others vs. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Com mission. The court order prevents Joana Gyan Cudjoe from presenting herself as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central until the case is fully resolved.

Legal Grounds for Disqualification
The injunction also prohibits both the NDC and the EC from recognising Cudjoe or granting her any rights as the candidate. The legal action against her is based on allegations that she forged her voter ID and NDC party card.

On October 10, 2024, the Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC, Samuel Tettey, officially informed Cudjoe of her disqualification, explaining that the Commission is legally bound by the court order, which has not been overturned or stayed.

Lawsuit Background
The suit was brought against Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC, and the EC by five applicants: Gyedu Frimpong, Akubilla Daniel, Enock Ntiamoh, Isaac Twum, and Doris Aidoo, who questioned the legitimacy of her candidacy.

As a result, the EC has barred Cudjoe from participating in the upcoming parliamentary race for the Amenfi Central constituency.
