Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has ordered the immediate closure of courts across the Upper East Region due to escalating tensions from the Bawku conflict.

This action follows concerns raised by court staff and judges about their safety and security in the area. The courts will remain closed until further notice.

In an official statement issued on October 29, the Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, advised registrars to secure all court assets and urged staff to prioritize their personal safety.

The ongoing Bawku conflict has led to at least 16 fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting the government to impose a curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily. The Ghana Police Service has also increased its presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway in response to a recent shooting incident.

The resurgence of violence is reportedly linked to the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, rekindling a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

The closed courts include:
1. High Court, Bolgatanga
2. Circuit Court, Bolgatanga
3. District Court, Bolgatanga
4. District Court, Zuarungu
5. District Court, Zebila
6. District Court, Garu
7. District Court, Bongo
