The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially requested that the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) nominate a new presidential candidate within the next 10 days following the death of the party’s flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor.

As part of this directive, the EC has temporarily suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was nearly complete. This decision follows the Commission’s receipt of formal notification of Madam Akua Donkor’s passing.

In an official statement dated October 29, the EC stated, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new Candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers which was near completion.”

The Electoral Commission also extended its condolences to Madam Akua Donkor’s family. She passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra; however, details surrounding her death remain undisclosed.

Madam Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, was a significant figure in Ghanaian politics, widely respected for her advocacy on behalf of farmers and women’s rights. Her passing is a considerable loss to her party and supporters as Ghana prepares for the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024.

With the elections approaching, the GFP is expected to act swiftly in selecting a suitable candidate to represent the party on the ballot in place of Madam Akua Donkor.
