In Bawku, renewed violence claimed another life on Saturday, November 2, bringing the recent death toll to 21. The latest victim, identified as Maadi, a commercial driver between Bolga and Bawku, was attacked while driving to Bolgatanga. His vehicle was set ablaze, sparking fresh gunfire in the area.
The unrest, which had appeared to be subsiding, flared up again following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since February 2023. Abagre initially fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued for his involvement in a disputed chieftaincy installation in Nalerigu.
On October 17, 2024, a High Court in Kumasi dismissed the warrant, paving the way for Abagre’s return. His arrival on October 26 reignited the long-standing chieftaincy conflict, leading to violent clashes that resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries.
To restore order, authorities have enforced a 6:00 am to 6:00 pm curfew, with security forces actively patrolling the area to prevent further violence.
