The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, led by King Prof. Odaifio Welentsi III, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on her historic election as Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, making her the first African woman to hold the position.
The Chiefs recognized her dedication and contributions, having served as Ghana’s Foreign Minister and the longest-serving Foreign Affairs Minister in the Fourth Republic. They noted her impressive journey, from serving as a Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister under President Kufuor to her current position as Foreign Affairs Minister, which is a testament to her leadership qualities.
The Chiefs praised Botchway as a “true daughter of the Ga Dangme and Ghana soil” whose achievements serve as an inspiration.
“We couldn’t agree more with Dr. Kwegyri Aggrey on his saying that if you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation,” the chiefs stated, acknowledging the significance of Ayorkor Botchway’s achievement as a woman in Ghana’s male-dominated political landscape.
The House offered its blessings as she embarked on this new path, encouraging Ghanaian women and girls to follow her example of courage and perseverance.
