Fake news is a major threat ahead of 2024 election – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has raised concerns that fake news and disinformation could significantly disrupt the upcoming December 7 general elections, potentially undermining voter confidence and threatening a peaceful election process.

To counter these risks, the EC emphasized the need for proactive measures to verify information before it is posted or shared with the public.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, Director of Training at the EC, stressed that unchecked spread of misinformation could lead to confusion among voters, incite tensions, and harm the credibility of the election process.

In a media interview on Tuesday, November 12, Dr. Quaicoo noted that the EC is working to strengthen its communication channels to ensure accurate information reaches the public swiftly.

Dr. Quaicoo also urged voters to rely on verified sources for election updates and to report suspicious or unverified information.

“And I said that my greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation. Because both the traditional and the social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking the authenticity.

“So I am saying that I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election.”
