The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled serious accusations against Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Central Command, alleging that he is the mastermind behind a New Patriotic Party (NPP) plot to rig the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking at a press conference on November 19, 2024, the NDC described a coordinated plan involving ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes and pink sheets, and voter intimidation using individuals disguised in military apparel. The party claimed the operation is centered in the Ashanti Region, with Brigadier-General Opoku allegedly storing illegal election materials, including weapons, military uniforms, and pre-marked ballot papers, at his Kumasi residence.
The NDC tied Brigadier-General Opoku’s current actions to his controversial role during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-elections, where he was implicated in violence that injured several civilians. The party stated, “This is a man who carries the shameful badge of being responsible for electoral violence. His continued presence in this role is a threat to Ghana’s democracy.”
The NDC called for his immediate removal and demanded investigations by the Chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector-General of Police, stating that the security agencies must ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.
