Election 2024: Asantehene Calls for Peace and Respect in Campaigns

Ahead of Ghana’s December 7, 2024 general elections, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on political parties and candidates to refrain from using hate speech and divisive rhetoric. He emphasized that the focus should be on presenting policies and engaging in constructive dialogue, rather than inciting violence.

Otumfuo’s comments came during a visit by Kofi Akpaloo, the Presidential Candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who sought Otumfuo’s support and blessings for the upcoming elections. The Asantehene, in his address, highlighted the importance of peace during the election period and urged political leaders to prioritize national unity.

Call for Unity and Peaceful Campaigns

The Asantehene stressed that the elections should be a reflection of Ghana’s democratic maturity, with all stakeholders committed to ensuring peace and progress. He also expressed his support for Kofi Akpaloo, remarking that, “It appears my children are the ones contesting in the elections, and yes, Kofi is one of them. I will pray that everything goes well for him as well. We pray for peace in the coming election.”

Otumfuo emphasized that winning an election is about patience and encouraged all political leaders to work together to ensure a peaceful process. He expressed his hope that Ghana will continue to thrive, underpinned by the support of both political leaders and citizens.

Kofi Akpaloo’s Call for International Support

Meanwhile, Kofi Akpaloo also addressed the matter of electoral integrity, calling on the US Embassy and its European counterparts to impose visa restrictions on individuals attempting to disrupt the electoral process. He noted that the recent warning by the American Embassy, stating that individuals causing chaos during the elections would be denied visas, is a step in the right direction. He urged European embassies, including the British High Commission, to adopt similar measures.

Akpaloo highlighted the importance of maintaining a peaceful election environment, stating, “This country is for everyone, so if you win this election, fantastic. If you don’t win, you come back the next time to contest. You cannot impose yourself on anyone.” He also urged the Electoral Commission to ensure transparency and fairness in the election process, assuring that his party is actively monitoring the situation to prevent any irregularities.
