President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially inaugurated the Ghana Bridge Power Project (GBPP), a groundbreaking 515-megawatt power plant in Tema, signaling a significant step toward Ghana’s energy efficiency and sustainability goals.

The GBPP, developed through a partnership between Endeavor Energy, a U.S.-based independent power producer focused on Africa, and Andaris Energy Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned energy investment company, represents a blend of innovative technology and strategic collaboration.

A Two-Phase Milestone

The project is being implemented in two phases. The first phase, now operational, consists of a 200MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant, featuring:

  • Five General Electric (GE) TM 2500 Gen8 units,
  • Five once-through steam generators,
  • One steam turbine unit,
  • An air-cooled condenser, and associated auxiliary systems.

The second phase, scheduled to commence in September next year, is expected to be completed within 48 months, bringing the full capacity of the plant to 515MW.

Addressing Ghana’s Energy Needs

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo hailed the project as a transformative achievement for Ghana’s energy sector.

“Today, we mark a pivotal moment in our journey toward energy independence. Reliable power is the backbone of development, and this facility proves Ghana’s readiness to overcome past challenges and embrace a brighter, energy-secure future,” the President said.

Reflecting on the era of dumsor (frequent power outages), he emphasized that the GBPP would not only stabilize electricity supply but also alleviate pressure on the national grid.

“This plant is more than a source of power; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what we can achieve through strategic partnerships and clear vision,” he added.

A Catalyst for Industrial Growth

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the critical role the plant would play in Ghana’s industrialization agenda, ensuring reliable power for factories, hospitals, schools, and households. He commended Endeavor Energy, Andaris Energy, and all stakeholders for their dedication to the project, while acknowledging the contributions of Ghanaian engineers and workers who helped bring the facility to life.

Call for Financial Commitment

The General Manager of Early Power Limited, Mr. Reggie France, stressed the importance of the government honoring its payment obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to enable the smooth delivery of power services.

He noted that the operationalization of the first 200MW phase of the GBPP demonstrated the success of public-private sector partnerships in addressing Ghana’s energy needs.

Visit to Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company

Following the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo paid a working visit to the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC), now a subsidiary of Ghana Gas Company following its acquisition.

The President expressed satisfaction with the transformations at GCMC since its acquisition, noting its improved capacity to meet the country’s growing demands for gas cylinder production.

A Vision for Energy Independence

The Ghana Bridge Power Plant stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology and sustainable solutions to meet the growing demand for electricity, driving industrial growth, and fostering economic development in Ghana.
