Richard Ahiagbah, Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lauded Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his critical role in Ghana’s economic recovery efforts. Speaking during an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Ahiagbah described Dr. Bawumia’s leadership on the Economic Management Team as “stellar and exceptional,” particularly in navigating the nation through significant economic challenges.
Economic Stewardship Amid Challenges
Ahiagbah emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s pragmatic approach to economic management has been instrumental in stabilizing Ghana’s economy during turbulent times. He acknowledged the challenges posed by both global and domestic crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted economies worldwide.
“COVID-19 is a consequential event that impacted our economy. However, we are now on a path to recovery. Since 2023, the economy has been on a steady rise, achieving an average expansion of 5.8%. This indicates that we are building a robust foundation for sustainable growth,” Ahiagbah stated.
Leadership in Difficult Times
Dr. Bawumia’s efforts to mitigate the pandemic’s economic impact, Ahiagbah noted, prevented a total collapse of the Ghanaian economy. He credited the Vice President’s strategic interventions, which he argued have positioned the nation for recovery and long-term growth.
“If you assess his performance, particularly in supporting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to manage and grow the economy, you’ll see that his efforts have been exceptional. But for COVID-19, Ghana’s economy would have expanded more significantly, creating additional jobs and opportunities,” Ahiagbah remarked.
Political Context and Economic Vision
Ahiagbah called for a balanced evaluation of Dr. Bawumia’s tenure, urging critics to consider the trajectory of the economy under his leadership rather than focusing solely on isolated setbacks. He asserted that the Vice President’s contributions have laid a foundation for the NPP’s broader vision of economic transformation.
With the NPP gearing up for the 2024 elections, the party’s communication wing has highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as a cornerstone of its campaign, positioning him as a symbol of economic competence and resilience.
