Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, a member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Economic and Finance Committee, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as a politically motivated rush to commission infrastructure projects. According to him, these efforts are a reaction to the NDC’s growing influence and its flagbearer’s positive reception among Ghanaians.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr. Khalid argued that the recent inauguration of projects, such as the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, underscores the NPP’s desperation to counter the NDC’s momentum.

Concerns Over Safety and Standards

Dr. Khalid alleged that many of the projects being commissioned are incomplete and fail to meet proper safety and quality standards. He cited the Flower Pot Interchange as an example, claiming that the project was hurriedly prepared for commissioning, with unresolved issues such as incomplete drainage systems and unfinished road slabs.

“It is laughable that murals were put up overnight on walls and pillars, yet critical components like drainage systems and slabs remain incomplete. How reckless could the President be to open such infrastructure for public use without ensuring health and safety standards are met?” he questioned.

Governance and Public Trust

The economist further accused the NPP of prioritizing optics over substantive governance, describing the move as an attempt to salvage its waning credibility. Dr. Khalid argued that such practices undermine public trust and reflect systemic management failures.

“This rushed commissioning only highlights the lack of planning and accountability in this government. Instead of focusing on delivering fully completed projects, they are more interested in scoring political points,” he said.

NDC’s Growing Influence

Dr. Khalid attributed the NPP’s actions to the increasing popularity of the NDC’s flagbearer, whom he described as resonating with the challenges and aspirations of the average Ghanaian.

“You see the NDC’s flagbearer connecting with the people, addressing real issues, and presenting solutions. The government’s panic response to this is evident in these hastily organized ceremonies to create an illusion of progress,” Dr. Khalid added.

Call for Accountability

He called on the government to ensure that infrastructure projects are completed to standard before commissioning and urged Ghanaians to critically assess the motives behind the NPP’s recent activities.

“The public deserves quality and accountability, not rushed projects aimed at deceiving them for votes,” Dr. Khalid concluded.
