The Electoral Commission (EC) has addressed concerns regarding shortages of ballot papers for the upcoming 2024 general elections, clarifying that the issue is not limited to the Volta and Bono Regions.
Speaking at an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare disclosed that similar shortages have been identified in other regions, including Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West, Western, and Bono East.
Clarifications on Shortfalls
Dr. Asare explained that reports suggesting the shortages were isolated to the Volta and Bono Regions are misleading. The EC has already taken measures to address these issues, including informing political parties through letters dated November 22 and November 28.
“The shortfalls occurred in Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West, Western, and Bono East Regions. The Volta and Bono Regions were no exceptions. As in the case of the Volta Region, the political parties were informed in writing, and the reprint was done to cover the shortfalls in those five regions,” he stated.
Reaffirming Transparency
The EC emphasized its commitment to transparency, noting that the reprinting of ballot papers demonstrates its accountability. Dr. Asare dismissed allegations of impropriety, urging the public and political parties to disregard misinformation aimed at undermining the Commission’s credibility.
“Why the noise about the shortfalls of only the Volta Region? If the Commission has anything to hide, would it transparently call for a reprint of the ballots to make up for the shortfalls?” he questioned.
Call to Avoid Mistrust
Dr. Asare appealed to the public and political stakeholders to verify information before sharing it on social media. He cautioned against attempts to create fear and panic or tarnish the EC’s image ahead of the elections.
“We entreat the general public and political parties to read memos carefully from the EC that may find their way on social media so as not to be swayed by persons whose sole agenda is to cause fear and panic and tarnish the image of the Commission,” he concluded.
Efforts to Ensure Smooth Elections
The EC reassured voters that every effort is being made to resolve the ballot paper shortages promptly to ensure the smooth conduct of the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary.
