John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has sharply criticized the ruling NPP for prioritizing infrastructure projects such as interchanges ahead of the December 7 elections, despite previous claims that similar initiatives were politically motivated during his tenure.
Mahama referenced a 2016 social media post by NPP member Gabby Otchere-Darko, who urged Ghanaians to prioritize the economy over infrastructural projects. Mahama highlighted this as a contradiction to the current administration’s actions, which have included the inauguration of major road projects like the Flowerpot Interchange and the Phase II of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, just before the elections.
Speaking in Bawaleshie during his final tour of the Greater Accra region, Mahama argued that the election should focus on issues like unemployment, economic hardship, and governance failures rather than on infrastructure achievements. He criticized the NPP for failing to improve the standard of living for Ghanaians, asserting that their leadership has taken the country backward over the past eight years.
“This election is about change and not an interchange. This election is about corrupt and incompetent leadership. Clearly, the NPP administration has failed to make the lives of Ghanaians better,” Mahama stated. He emphasized that the purpose of elections is to choose leaders who can improve citizens’ lives, a goal he believes the current government has not achieved.
