National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has urged Ghanaians to reject the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections, citing the rising cost of living as evidence of the ruling government’s mismanagement.
Addressing a rally in Ayawaso East, Mahama spotlighted the escalating price of Kenkey—a staple Ghanaian dish—as a poignant symbol of the economic hardships under the NPP administration.
Economic Criticism
Mahama highlighted the significant jump in the price of Kenkey, which has risen from GH¢1 to GH¢5 per ball, drawing parallels to broader economic challenges such as inflation and high food costs.
“We all remember what the NPP said about the NDC government. Back then, things were not perfect, but there was peace, and life was affordable. Now, three balls of Kenkey cost GH¢15, and if you add one fish, that’s GH¢20. This is not acceptable,” Mahama stated.
He accused the government of failing to provide relief to ordinary citizens, despite campaigning in 2016 on promises of better economic management.
Call for Change
The former president called on Ghanaians to vote decisively to replace the NPP, stressing that under his leadership, the NDC would prioritize food security, affordability, and policies that directly benefit households.
“I am reminding you, the people of Ayawaso East, that the NPP has failed. Let them pack their stuff and leave,” he declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Wider Campaign Message
Mahama’s remarks align with sentiments he expressed during a campaign rally in Bodi, Western North Region, earlier this month. There, he criticised the government’s inability to control inflation and ensure affordable food prices, framing food security as a critical indicator of economic competence.
The NDC flagbearer assured Ghanaians that his administration would implement measures to stabilize the economy, lower inflation, and reduce the cost of living.
As the December 7 elections approach, Mahama continues to emphasize the everyday struggles of Ghanaians as a key reason for seeking a return to power.
