Gov’t to Train Auto Mechanics for Digital Auto Revolution – NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has announced that the government is implementing initiatives to equip Ghanaian auto mechanics with the skills needed to navigate the rapidly changing automotive industry.

Speaking to garage leaders at Suame Magazine in the Suame Constituency on Thursday, November 28, Dr. Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized the critical need for mechanics to adapt to the global shift towards digitalization and electric vehicles.

Preparing for the Auto Revolution

“Our goal is to ensure that Ghanaian mechanics are not left behind as the global automotive industry transitions towards digitalization,” NAPO said.

He explained that traditional vehicles currently repaired by local mechanics would eventually be replaced by electric and digital cars, creating an urgent need for skills upgrades.

“The manufacturing of these older car models will eventually stop. We shall support garages to prepare for this digital era so you don’t lose out in business,” he assured.

Dr. Prempeh highlighted that the government, through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives, has already begun training auto mechanics to remain relevant and competitive in the evolving market.

Support for Auto Mechanics and Importers

In addition to capacity-building initiatives, NAPO addressed challenges facing importers, particularly the unpredictability of import duties at Ghana’s ports.

“Import duties keep changing at the ports, and this creates problems for importers. Dr. Bawumia, when elected as president, will introduce a fixed-duty system to resolve this issue,” he stated.

The proposed fixed-duty system would allow importers to know the exact cost of duties before their goods arrive, fostering better planning and economic stability.

Commitment to the Auto Industry

Dr. Prempeh reiterated the NPP’s dedication to supporting the auto sector, ensuring that mechanics and importers are equipped to thrive in the changing industry landscape.

“The NPP has the interests and welfare of auto mechanics at heart. We are committed to providing the tools and training needed for success in this digital auto revolution,” he concluded.

The announcement comes as Ghana braces for significant changes in the automotive industry, with global trends pointing towards a future dominated by electric and autonomous vehicles.
